Air cargo services are gradually recovering

The effects of Covid-19 have been felt around the globe and it can be said that it has severely impacted some sectors. The virus has dominated everything that it touched, every business, every sector, and in fact every human being. It changed and shaped them in ways that were beyond imagination. Today, we will look at another sector that has faced the adverse effects of the pandemic and how it is trying to slowly crawl back on its feet.

Though, the demand for air cargo is currently recuperating gradually from the impact of Covid-19, as per the reports of the International Air Transport Association. In the month of June, the association delivered information that demonstrated improvement but at a slower rate than what the portion of the conventional driving pointers would suggest. Measured in cargo tonne-kilometers (TCKs), the global demand has fallen by 17.6 percent, and 19.9 percent for the international operators in the month of June as compared to the previous year.

Even after suffering from the adverse effects of the pandemic, this is a humble improvement from what happened in the month of May which was essentially a 20.1 percent year-on-year drop. The belly capacity for international air cargo and the global capacity decreased by 34.1 and 70 percent in the month of June, respectively. The sudden withdrawal of passenger services had affected the demand adversely in the year 2019 and continued to do the same in 2020.

Even if we look at the June regional performance, we can find how the demand shrank by 20 percent in 2020, for international air cargo which is similar to what happened a year ago. Let’s look at some stats of the rate of demand drop in some continents in June:

  • The European carriers faced an annual drop of 27.6 percent in their volumes of international cargo and are said to be better than what they faced in the month of May which was essentially 29.5 percent. This international capacity decreased as low as 40.7 percent and was one of the weakest at this time period.
  • North American carriers faced a decrease of 88 percent year-on-year and the international capacity faced a drop of 30.7 percent while the middle eastern carriers experienced a decline of 19.1 percent. Their performance was the best comparatively and their international capacity decreased by 25.8 percent.
