Severe container congestion has hit Shenzhen’s Yantian port. The port is responsible for handling one-third of Guangdong’s foreign trade shipments and one-quarter of China’s exports to the U.S.
Yantian port mainly connects China with Europe and the U.S. The port has cited the disrupted operations of foreign ports during the pandemic as the main factor for the current interruptions.
The advanced shipping of exports ahead of the Spring Festival has also added to the existing pressure. The terminal yards and traffic in the port are increasing tremendously. The container storage period on the port has also increased from 3-5 days to 9.5 days.
YICT has announced the suspension of container exports, which were to leave the port a week later. The measure is taken to control the current situation. The port has also added machines to aid the container handling capacity and staff. It also facilitates and eases the traffic flow of the port.
According to the Transport Ministry of China, YICT handles 50% of Shenzhen’s 26.5 million TEU during 2020. The ports of Ningbo, Shanghai, and Dalian are also poorly affected by container congestion. The average wait time of containers at these ports is around 1.5-3 days, and the yard density stands at 80-98%.
